Two weeks ago I had the chance to visit Montréal with my Mr. Superfoodista. It was a long weekend here in the US (one of the few!) and we took the opportunity to discover a new place. We decided to go to Montréal, because it would be somewhat different from Miami – if just only weather wise.
We really loved the city and its vibe. The locals are extremely friendly – even if you don’t speak French. I was using some of my rusty Swiss French (haven’t used it much since I moved to the US!), but it wasn’t even necessary, as you can get by with English anywhere. We stayed in the Old Town, which was really charming, as you can see in the picture below. The first day of our trip, we spent mostly walking around this part of the city.
We were also blessed with really gorgeous weather throughout the whole weekend, so we decided to rent bikes on the second day as means to discover the city. There are bike stations and bike paths throughout the entire center of Montréal and it’s really a great way to get around, plus you can pedal off the calories from eating all the fantastic food there 😉
The first place we visited on the second day by bike was parc La Fontaine, a really cute small park with two lakes and lush, green alleys with trees.
After parc La Fontaine, we biked a little bit uphill to parc Mont-Royal – wow! What a view and great atmosphere we found there. It seems like all the “Montréalais” came out of their homes to welcome summer together with us! People were sitting on the grass, making music together or engaging in what seems to be a very trendy sport at the moment: slack line.
But I wouldn’t be a foodie if we didn’t took also time to indulge in some food adventures, we had amazing French food and other foods that is more difficult to get in Miami. Some places we went to and I would recommend would be:
- Les Deux Gamins: Cute French Bistro, I had probably one of the best French food in a while there, a must-try is the French onion soup, it comes covered in a thick layer of cheese; I also had the beef bourgignon which tasted fantastic
- Kazu: it’s really a hole in the wall, not more, but those are usually the best places, right? I had a delicious Ramen soup there, Mr. Superfoodista had a rice bowl with fresh tuna and salmon and a delicious sauce
- Holder: quite a hip place, big, great service, the food I feel was not as good as at Les Deux Gamins, but we really liked the atmosphere and someone from our hotel had recommended it to us
Oh, and à propos food: One of the first dishes we had when we arrived was obviously: Poutine! THE typical Canadian dish, especially in the state of Québec. There are plenty of places in town that serve poutine and I guess we probably went to one of the more touristic ones, but it was a really cute place, inside the murals of an old house and the poutine was fantastic!
Poutine is basically french fries, topped with gravy and some cheese curd. In the version we ordered, they also added some smoked meat. While at every other table, the guests would have one plate each, Mr. Superfoodista and me decided to share one – because, I mean, the portions were huge!! 😉 And we ordered some salad on the side too, for the health aspects. Although I don’t eat Superfoods only, I try to eat at least balanced in every meal – ahem 😉
While it was delicious, it would definitely not be a dish to eat every day. This brought me to the idea of making a Superfood version of poutine – that you could have way more often! By the way, it’s vegetarian too and can be made very easily vegan.

- 2 medium sweet potatoes
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil (any, I used olive oil)
- Salt & pepper to season
- For the vegetarian gravy: 1 tbsp vegetable oil, 1 small onion, diced, ½ cup stock, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 - 2 teaspoon any kind of flour (I used corn starch and tapioca to make the dish gluten-free), dissolved in a bit of cold water
- Sun dried tomato, cut into small pieces
- Parsley, chopped
- Low fat cheese, grated (for vegans: use vegan cheese or just leave out)
- Cut the sweet potatoes into finger long sticks, mix them well with the oil, salt and pepper, until evenly coated
- Spread out on a baking tray and bake in the oven at 450°F for about 15 minutes (or until brown and slightly crispy - please note these French fries will never get as crispy as fried ones, but they are 100 times healthier!)
- In the meantime, make the gravy: heat the oil in a pan, add the onions and cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant, then add the stock and the soy sauce, cook for another 2 minutes, then add the water-flour mix until you reach the right consistency (tip: add rather less than too much, as the gravy can thicken really fast!)
- Assemble on a platter: first the sweet potato fries, then the gravy, then cheese, then the tomatoes and lastly top with some parsley
